Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War by Nathaniel Philbrick Mayflower: A story of courage,community,and war is about the lives of Pilgrims and the new lifestyle they are entering. The mayflower was the ship that transported the Pilgrims to the New World in 1620. Mr.Philbrick discusses the relationships amongst the England Pilgrims and their new neighbors the Native Americans. Upon meeting, there is already distrust between the two groups because they do not fully know each other. The pilgrims and native americans are now on a long voyage to accumulate trust,build a relationship, adapt to the new lifestyle. While approaching winter, it is approximately two people who die per day due to hunger, the weather, and sickness.Several conflicts have occurred between the Pilgrims and the Native Americans that could lead to severe attacks. In one location of the New World, more than 175 Pilgrims begin to fight the local Native Americans for their goods and food supply which created excessive violence. According to Mr. Philbrick, there high levels of racism from both group . State officials of Massachusetts began to relocate several Native Americans off the Boston Harbor. The Pilgrims eventually meet some Native Americans in the area and are able to form a trading alliance that would benefit both parties. The pilgrims and native americans formed what is now called Thanksgiving. Massasoit was the most powerful Native American leader in the region. His group had been battling disease and approximately ninety percent of the region s Native Americans died from what may have been bubonic plague that had also killed some of the mayflower passengers. Furthermore, England was in a civil war and migration to the New World decreased. Some settlers returned to England and joined the impeachment of King Charles.The king ended up getting executed in 1649. After the execution, England became Puritan. A villain is defined as an evil character in a novel, movie, play, or other story, especially one who is the main enemy of the hero according to Encarta Dictionary. In Othello, Iago fits this definition perfectly though Othello does not recognize that Iago is his enemy until the end of the story. Iago is the evil-minded, backstabbing character in this dramatic story. Before all this, Emilia, Iagos wife, finds the handkerchief from Desdemonas bedroom and gives it to Iago later that night, allowing the plan to work out which she has no idea about. Othello by now is already distrusting Desdemona as well as looking down on her. By Act 3, Scene 3, Othello has every right to believe Iago because his trust is on him and his words are factual. Desdemona cannot influence Othello to believe in her. All the signs prove that she is a liar. Desdemona is the least most fortunate innocent character in this story. Agawa, the forest or langdas is the source of livelihood and a place where their unique culture thrive, one of the major features of indigenous peoples. In terms of livelihood, the langdas is the source of wild fruits and animals, lumber, and firewood. In the indigenous law they practice, selling of pine lumber is prohibited. Also, outsiders are prohibited from getting anything from the langdas making the practice sustainable. In terms of tradition and culture, they believe that there are spirits guarding the rivers and forests. This is one of the reasons why indigenous peoples do not exploit the forest resources. Also, they manage the forest in a sustainable way because of the belief that their ancestors, who were buried in sacred places, mingle with their affairs. The role of women in environment protection, forest management, and conservation is very significant. Two of the key informants of the study conducted by Caguioa (2011) and her colleagues are old women who spent most of their life living in the area. The people of Brgy. Agawa, has a history of resistance in protecting the langdas and the environment. One sign of protest they had done before was the exposure of older women’s breast to oppose people who wanted to operate saw mills in the area back in the 1940s. In response to the secret resin tapping activities done to pine trees that operated during the 1970s, women of Besao secretly removed the plastic catchers and burned all of it. In general, women of Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province show their protest in the regional and national level in opposition of road construction, mining, and logging projects that will ruin the langdas. Amidst globalization, vulgar consumerism, high demands from the market, and laws that treat us all equals [sometimes even without regard to culture], the people of Brgy. Agawa, Besao, Mt. Province especially women managed the forest in a sustainable way. Following their traditions and belief systems, they had managed to conserve the forest by following natural mechanisms to restore the forest. Given the resources and knowledge systems we have as members of the dominant and so called â€Å"developed†society, we should devise forest management and conservation mechanisms that are easy and applicable. However, due to a market-driven economy we engage in, we have no control over our resources anymore. The working mechanism that works today is â€Å"what the market demands, the market gets†even at the expense of the environment and the people who manages to protect and conserve the forest. Forest management, although primarily dominated by men, it should be the domain of all even if there are differences in gender. As seen in the case of Brgy. Agawa, Mt. Province, women had great contributions in forest management and conservation. This incorporates political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors to assess the environment. As a result, I will investigate these factors further in this report, for example, by looking at the works of Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaars. I will also examine the role of keiretsu in Japan and the possible impacts that they could have on foreign investors. 2. Does the Japanese culture matter? This is a question that many investors ask themselves when considering entering a new market and the most common reply is that it is probably the greatest obstacle to success. However, a difficulty arises in defining the term culture. It can be, perhaps, be best understood as the shared beliefs of a group. (Dawes, B. 1995, p.58) When analyzing a new environment, firms need to identify the cultures in the chosen market, as such knowledge is necessary for success. Culture analysts have developed models to characterise cultures such as Hofsted and Trompenaars. Hofstede suggested four dimensions of culture (Appendix 1). From his study, Hofstede found the Japanese culture to be heavily reliant on group affiliations and loyalty, and described it as collective. Javidan, M. and House, R. J. (2001, p.292) explain that an important reason why this is, is due to its harsh environment and being unsupportive for the survival of its population. For example, it takes at least 20 people to successfully maintain a rice paddy. This is the opposite of what is generally found in the UK, where managers tend to encourage entrepreneurship and individual responsibility. As a result, prospective managers in Japan need to be aware of this cooperative issue. Also, due to strong uncertainty avoidance, members of Japanese culture prefer rules and structure. Furthermore, the Japanese culture is one that is masculine. For example, they value competitiveness and are assert ive than their counterparts. These are all factors that managers need to consider when entering Japan. Building on Hofstedes work, Trompenaars focussed more on the implications on management from cultural differences. His research concluded with seven dimensions of culture (Appendix 2) and for each one, he positioned each country relative to each other. From this study, he found the same conclusion as that from Hofstede, in that Japan is a collective society. In addition, it is a neutral culture in that they show less emotion in the workplace compared to others. Furthermore, the relationships developed in the workplace are diffused and extended into the whole society. Consequently, this provides an insight into possible conflicts that prospective managers may face. As a result, a possible solution could be to promote social events outside the workplace, as well as encouraging team-building exercises. As with any study, the models of Hofstede and Trompenaars can be criticised. Generalisations can be difficult to make due to the nature of national cultures; there are various definitions and they can be interpreted differently by various groups. Trompenaars, for example, have been criticised for failing to match their model satisfactorily to the actual responses of managers and basing some of their conclusions on differing, more subjective assumptions and observations. (Dawes, B. 1995, p.61) Even though such models have limitations, this model provides a framework and a foundation to research and develop further. The Japanese business environment is generally viewed as very traditional due to the very rigid labour laws and the general expectation of lifetime employment with the same employer. Consequently, in a survey of US companies with operations in Japan, about 62 per cent said difficulties in recruiting skilled staff were a factor. (Leadbeater, C. 1991, p.6) This system includes on-the-job training whereby employees are trained within the firm and partake in a long term programme. Also, with the prospect of rotations within the firm, employees have the opportunity to develop their professional abilities. Consequently, prospective investors should consider the costs of such training schemes that may need implementing. In addition, the tradition view is supported strongly due to the fact that Japan has an aging population. The demographics can clearly be seen below: Source: Anon. (2007). Business in Japan: Still work to be done. The Economist, 385(8557), p.13. Japans population is greying faster than that of any other big economy, so the old will become an increasing burden on workers. Today, one-fifth of Japanese are over 65; by 2015, the proportion will grow to one in four, or about 30m. (Anon. 2008a, p.31) Consequently, the problem of finding a young workforce may prove operating in Japan to be difficult. Dr William Ouchi has developed Theory Z based on the Japanese management style. This focuses on the welfare of the employees, on and off the job, as well as providing a job for life which increases loyalty. Thus employees morale and productivity increases. Further characteristics include collective responsibility and decision making, as well as employee evaluation on a longer term perspective. Subsequently, to control a successful workforce, these characteristics should be implemented. Being the leader of a Pacific trading bloc, more countries are trying to emulate Japans success by emulating their practices. Consequently, learning the Japanese approach should be more important for foreign firms. Nevertheless, in reality this is not the case as Czinkota (1998, p.22) found in 1991, only 1,180 U.S. students attended school in Japan, whereas more than 30,000 Japanese students came to the United States. Unless we learn to observe and absorb Japanese knowledge and know-how to a greater extent, we will continue to be surprised by new developments because we werent paying attention. An alternative solution for investors could be to encourage and provide incentives for Japanese students who study abroad to return to Japan and work for their firm. 3. A changing nation? The primary reason for this is that young professionals do not want to revolve their life around their work. Consequently, this shift in employment patterns has reduced inequality by allowing more women into the workforce and pensioners to rejoin. This decline in traditional characteristics and the opening of society is positive news to prospective investors in that it enables more flexible employment practices. 4. The affect of keiretsu In the very short time since 1989 a Japanese word migrated to America, jumped onto the cover of Business Week, made a dramatic debut before the U.S. Congress, did a variety of television appearances, and was quickly naturalized into the English language. The term keiretsu may lack the cultural associations of kimono and geisha and the upscale image of sushi, but it has accomplished something that these other Japanese imports have not: it has joined Americas business lexicon. (Miyashita, K. and Russell, D. W. 1994, p.ix) Keiretsu are a group of individual firms that can be viewed together due to their affiliation with one another and their networks. These can be of either horizontal or vertical hierarchy and involve the transfer of information, finance or personnel. They stand accused of restricting the opportunities of outsiders wishing to sell to keiretsu members and dominate certain markets, and have been labelled as one of the most important obstacles to foreign companies trying to penetrate the Japanese market. (Czinkota, M. R. and Kotabe, M. 1998, p.11) Consequently, for a firm such as Experian, to enter the Japanese market would be tough and a possible alternative would be to merge with a member of such a keiretsu. Nevertheless, this alternative would not be simple as the target firm would already have strong affiliations. Furthermore, Czinkota, M. R. and Kotabe, M. (1998) have carried out a study to find out what researchers, business executives and policy makers from the US, Europe and Japan believe are the major barriers for foreign firms when entering Japan. The results identified 16 areas of concern and factor analysis showed the four major barriers to be government trade barriers, bureaucratic practices, the culture barrier (including keiretsu) and the very high level of demand from customers (Appendix 3). The high entry costs along with the keiretsu and their closed business links was identified as the most important barrier and one of the least likely to chance. This further strengthens my opinion that entry would be tough with restricted access. There were limitations in this study, for example, there were only 60 completed responses. Two-thirds of those responses were from American members and only 13 of them were from Japanese members. In addition, the occupation of those that took part was not evenly spread. Nevertheless, it seemed that the respondents nationality or their occupation did not have any bearing on the final results. 5. Japanese financial keiretsu Once the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened after the war in 1949, it was no longer the first choice for raising capital for many firms. As a result, the government enabled the development of bank-led keiretsu, which became firms primary choice. Consequently, every firm developed its network to include a bank to raise capital, for protection or to seek advice. Also, in a study by Professor Paul Sheard on the main bank system in Japan, he concluded that banks act as credit monitors; a substitute for the kind of screening and monitoring institutions that are prevalent in other capital markets, such as bond- and credit-rating institutions and security analysis institutions. (Miyashita, K. and Russell, D. W. 1994, p.50) In 1981, 84 per cent of the firms listed on the Tokyo stock exchange could be associated with a financial keiretsu, of which 76 per cent were affiliated with the six largest financial keiretsu (Berglà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½f, E. and Perotti, E. 1994). Consequently, for a firm such as Experian, the barriers to enter Japan are very high and there may be very little demand for such a firm. I do not believe that a firm with affiliations with financial keiretsu would turn to the new entrant. 6. Conclusion Having used a variety of sources for this report, I believe that I have sufficient evidence to form an unbiased opinion. If entered correctly, the Japanese market could prove particularly rewarding with considerable benefits. However, when deciding on whether to enter Japan or not, the social and cultural factors are very important to consider. It is true that the Japanese business environment is losing its traditional values, for example, with the reduction of lifetime employment, however, the demographics of Japan show an aging population. Also, the keiretsu do form a heavy guarded barrier to enter Japan and consequently, I believe that investors should investigate this further and possibly communicate with them. A recommended solution could be the possibility of a partnership or merger with an existing member of the keiretsu. For example, Experian could merge with a bureau within the Federation of Credit Bureaus of Japan. Note: Information regarding specific keiretsu can be limiting and biased, and therefore I decided not to consider it. Also, to support my conclusion further, I could have used more recent sources.

The internet is a busy place, full of people, many of whom share your own passions and interests. And not just friends, its also a place where its possible to meet someone special. Naturally the hyper-connected youths of today use the internet as if its an extension of themselves. For them meeting new people online seems like a given. But the internet holds just as much promise for the rest of us. It has grown in popularity as a way to find friends, to chat among like minded people, and for finding love, sex, quick flings, soulmates, partners, husbands and wives depending on whos looking. Nowadays there are more and more people who are single enough to use it. The number of people getting divorced is higher than ever. The US, UK, Canada, Russia, New Zeland and Australia all in the top ten for highest divorce rates (per 1,000 people). Society has changed, and with it our values. It is no longer seen as socially unacceptable to leave someone. Why stay in an unhappy marriage? There are many women and men who have faced that very question. Of course there are still those who see it as a sign of a sinful society, or feminism run rampant, or the natural progression of a morally bankrupt western culture, or any number of fantasies that explain a trend in statistics they dont understand. In the past divorces were rare, but were the couples happy? Thankfully society is breaking free of old fashioned attitudes. Where it would have been seen as debauched and morally sinful for a woman to leave her husband, or a man to leave his wife, now individuals have an out. The modern world is about individual choice and personal freedom. Because of this, more people are single, and open to the possibility of meeting someone new. People are also working harder. A busy career can leave little time to build a social life and result in a stagnant love life. Success can often bring more work, and more money, at the expense of someone to share it with. Many successful individuals are even reticent when it comes to looking for love. Relationships can be a lot of trouble, and some people are content without them. Being far removed from our primitive origins, we are no longer slaves to biological imperatives. On the other end of the scale, its thought that as many as a third of the singles on the internet arent quite as single as youd think. But assuming we are single, free, and would like to find someone special, where do we look in the 21st century? Bars and clubs are naturally as popular as ever. Many people still meet through work and friends. Many people bump into that special someone through a random encounter a dropped batch of paperwork, getting stuck in a lift it could be clichà ©, but it will still happen for some of us. With the advent of the internet, meeting people online has become yet another option. A natural one, in this connected world we live in. Personals and dating are big business, bringing in $503.4 million (US) in 2005 and showing consistent year after year growth. And in the UK, with its population of around 60 million, 7.8 million singles used some form of dating service in 2007 according to a press release by dating service PARSIHP. Meeting people on the internet doesnt have to be conducted through dating sites either. Many people who use the internet find people naturally as they wander the landscape of cyberspace. Nor is this a new phenomenon. The dawn of the internet saw the creation of crude bulletin boards and internet relay chat. People found each other using these services just as they do using Messenger clients and forums today. The technology has definitely advanced through, and this has brought people a large number of places to go on the internet. There are many different services that run on the internet, here are some of them: Internet relay chat One of the oldest services on the internet, internet relay chat (IRC) is a service that posts messages to the page instantaneously so that the users can have a conversation that flows naturally in real time. There are thousands upon thousands of chatrooms available through IRC servers, and most of them are free. They can be accessed by downloading an IRC client, though sometimes a bit of configuring is needed to make it work. IRC isnt the easiest thing in the world to pick up and learn, a throwback from its early origins. Messenger clients From Yahoo Messenger to MSN, and now more recently Skype (which can be used in much the same way as a messenger between calls), messenger clients allowed people to manage a list of contacts and then chat with those contacts just like in IRC. Unlike IRC, big improvements were made to the interfaces and ease-of-use that helped to explode the popularity of messengers until we find that most people use at least one. Messengers are also great for keeping in touch with business contacts, family, friends, among many other uses. One of the earliest messenger service called ICQ had a random chat button that would find you someone to chat to, or indeed allow them to find you. Social Networks Like them or loath them, social networks found their place as the heart of meeting people on the internet. At first they were places to link up with your friends and share information about you what you were doing, how you felt, where you were, or indeed where you werent (such as working). Social networks soon snowballed into a giant productivity eating monster. If you havent heard of social networks then hello, and greetings under-rock person. Some of the more well known include LiveJournal, MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo. LiveJournal mixes blogging and social networking, Facebook has become synonymous with social networks, MySpace synonymous with controversy and Bebo was huge in the UK then fell out of favour with users. The phenomena of keeping in touch with contracts led to new companies trying spinnoffs of the idea. One of these Twitter lets users post short messages of up to 140 characters. These tweets can then be read by followers. Like them or loath them, social networks app ear to be here to stay. Work Rather than have separate disjointed categories, lets lump everything thats done for the sake of work together. It can be emails, video conferencing, virtual conferencing, social networking, messaging. If your work requires you to liase with anyone at all over the internet then theres always the chance of meeting someone you hit it off with. It happens all the time. Friends Friends are always looking out for you. If youre single then you can guarantee that your friends are looking out for someone to hook you up with. On the internet this behaviour is no different. Dating services Dating services started off as simple catalogs of user-made profiles, that could be searched according to any criteria. Paying users could then contact the users they found interesting. Growing from these primitive early systems, they added features such as live chat, messenger services, social networking and so on in order to stay ahead of competing services. Their combination of the best ideas found on the internet to provide the optimal environment for users to meet each other, and maintained the value of the service so that people would continue to pay. Dating services have been one of the leading drivers of growth. Similarly theres also a lot of overlap between dating services and other internet services such as social networks. Online Universes Pushing internet interactions further into the futuristic vision of cyberspace, online worlds give us the Neuromancer vision of cyberspace. Gamers were among the first to explore online universes. The advent of massively multiplayer online games (or worlds/universes/spaces) collectively known as MMOs added a new dimension to the internet. The earliest were game worlds, where users had no set goals, other than lead a double (and supposedly exciting) life as a mage, wizard, ranger, space pilot or any number of alternative personas depending on the game. These evolved, and soon virtual universes began to appear which played down gaming aspects and played up its usage as an alternative universe. Second Life proved to be one of the most popular, and its name captures the spirit in which many of these new universes were formed. Others, such as Entropia Universe grew out of games, but diversified into a platform for delivering anything the partner company could imagine (by renting out world ). In these spaces, you can wander through virtual towns and meet peoples avatars as they in turn go about their business. Avatars are, to steal a description from the matrix films, the mental projection of your digital self. People customize their avatars and in doing so reveal a lot about themselves. Interestingly, people behave similarly to the way they do in real life, albeit with less inhibitions. Sociologists have a great time studying virtual worlds because of this, but that is a story for a different article. Virtual universes however are a little too gamelike for some of us. A more recent addition to the virtual universe landscape called IMVU cleverly combines messenger services with Virtual Universe services to create a hybrid that has found a more mainstream popularity than other virtual worlds. Users can keep in touch through a messenger like contact list, or use its social network-like website, and chat to users in virtual rooms. Unlike virtual worlds, there is no walki ng around. You can move your avatar around, but only to fixed locations called nodes. Standing nodes feature in all rooms, and adding furniture adds more nodes. A couch will come sitting nodes, and some furniture includes nodes for couples to sit snuggled together. Removing the ability to walk around, kept IMVU simple enough that the virtual universe features didnt overwhelm the chat features. Users can buy new rooms, furniture, clothes, pets. They can also buy streaming music to play in their rooms. People meet in virtual universes all the time. Sometimes they even get married in the online universe. Often they get married and then quickly split. Sometimes couples take their relationship further, and meet in real life. Does it work? U.S Monetary Policy in 1995 When Alan Greenspan presented the Federal Reserve's semi-annual report on monetary policy to the Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy, the Committee on Banking and Financial Services, and the U.S. House of Representatives on February, Dr. Greenspan touted a cautionary yet favorable view of the U.S. economy. He states that "With inflationary pressures apparently receding, the previous degree of restraint in monetary policy was no longer deemed necessary, and the FOMC consequently implemented a small reduction in reserve market pressures last July." (Greenspan, 1996, Speech) During the Summer and Fall of 1995, the economy experienced a strengthening of aggregate demand growth. According to Greenspan, this increase in aggregate demand brought finished goods inventories and sales into near equilibrium. The Fed's fine tuning of the economy seemed to be paying off. Greenspan had a positive outlook for the economy for the rest of 1995. He states "the economy, as hoped has moved onto a trajectory that could be maintained--one less steep than in 1994, when the rate of growth was clearly unsustainable, but one that nevertheless would imply continued significant growth and incomes." (Greenspan, 1996, Speech) Towards the end of the year, the economy showed signs of slowing. Fearing a prolonged slowdown or even a recession in the economy, and with inflationary expectations waning, Chairman Greenspan and the Federal Reserve cut rates again in December. (Greenspan, 1996, Speech) There are, of course, critics of 1995's monetary policy. Most of the criticism came in the early part of 1995 when the Fed raised rates again. In the article "Are We Losing Altitude Too Fast" from the May 1, 1995 issue of Time magazine written by John Greenwald, he explains that the economy might not be coming in for a "soft landing" like the fed predicts. Trying to sustain 2 to 3 percent growth might lead us into a recession. Mr. Greenwald explains how the Fed's actions in 1994 and early 1995 has hurt individuals and the economy as a whole. "Corporate layoffs are far from over," says Greenwald, "they generally accelerate when firms find themselves in an economy that is weakening." (Greenwald, Time, 5/1/95, p80) Unemployment and layoffs aren't the only thing to worry about according to Mr. Greenwald. The automobile industry and the housing markets are both getting hit in the pocket books. Paul Speigel, owner of a New York car dealership explains his woes by saying '"We're doing our best to keep up the volume by discounting, working on our customers, but the Fed's rate hikes have dampened the ability of many Chevrolet customers to buy that new vehicle."'
